RTO Essentials: A Quality Student Experience, Why Is It So Important?

Student Experience
Student Experience

The student experience is a key factor in maintaining compliance and in the overall success of your RTO. Training environments that feel safe and welcoming will likely produce higher participation rates in the learning process.

A student who is more engaged in the learning process will be better able to apply their knowledge when they enter the workforce. Students would be more likely to return to study further if the experience was enjoyable the first time around.

Referrals will be more significant with students who have had an enjoyable experience.

How to create a quality student experience

We always hear from our clients about improving the student experience. And rightly so; a poor user experience is quite commonly a reason for non-compliance within an RTO.

Six reasons for a bad user experience:

  1. Poor navigability – non-intuitive or challenging to find their way around

  2. Unreliable platform – not able to be accessed for some reasons

  3. Inadequate reporting – no idea of how what’s been completed

  4. Paper-based resources – too much reliance on downloading and printing assignments

  5. Poor support – not having direct contact to help when needed.

  6. Poor quality content – boring content that doesn’t engage

Staying on top of delivering a stellar learning experience is so vital to the success of your RTO. Below, we discuss some simple ways to improve your overall student experience. 1. Key Performance Indicators for Quality Assurance

Get feedback from your students to measure their satisfaction with your progress. You can do this through surveys, interviews, completion rates and referrals. If you keep an eye on these things over time, it'll be easy to tell if and when there have been improvements. Social media is a great way to get feedback through Facebook likes and shares.

2. Make content easily accessible online

A student should be able to download and upload workbooks and assignments easily through an online portal. Even better, avoid downloading and uploading altogether, and have an online system like Office 365 where everything can be completed online.

3. Progress reporting

The more students know about their achievements, the more motivated they will become. This is why implementing some form of tracking system in your student portal that shows students exactly where they are in their qualification, like Letting them know their percentage of course completion and what assessments need to be completed, is a great way to increase student overall satisfaction.

4. Get your content online With the rise of technology, information is easier to access than ever before. By providing students with a student portal that contains your materials in digital form, you will enhance their experience and make it convenient for them to at least get started on some work if they don't have time or accessibility during class or office hours.

A portal can be seen as essential to communicating with your learners 24/7 and centralising student engagement.

5. Virtual Classrooms In the past 12 months, virtual conferencing and classrooms have become the new norm, so most learners today will be familiar with these tools. The flexibility afforded by virtual classrooms allows learners to attend classes virtually from anywhere and is a cost-effective tool to implement.
